Why the project is called Elisabet?
Elisabet is a little girl who needs help learning to walk. She was prematurely born on New Year's Eve of 2004 and suffered a birth trauma. Her family has tried all known treatment methods in Estonia to cure Elisabet and they have discovered that all possible and effective treatment methods are not yet available in our country.
They have discovered that:
- there are several separate service providers for children with mobility impairment that operate on their own;
- the treatment is often experimental and each doctor has a different opinion;
- the efficiency of treatment is unspecified;
- laboratory assessments of the patients' condition can be given only for research purposes;
- we do not have a robotic device in Estonia that would help developing childrens' walking pattern;
- the number of people that need help is large and includes all age groups.
The urgent need for the robot assisted walking device as well as the large number of people that would benefit from it inspired the family to initiate a project called "Elisabet" in order to help children with mobility impairment to walk. They named the project after their own daughter Elisabet who is one among many children who need help.
The project is aimed at people who have lost their mobility for some reason and need help creating or restoring their walking pattern. Unfortunately the number of potential beneficiaries of the project is limited because the device cannot help children with severe multiple disabilities.
The main idea of the project is to create a strong nationwide network of researchers, doctors of recognised clinics, therapists, treatment and rehabilitation service providers, in order to help people with mobility impairment.
The initiators of the project address the Estonian society with a quote from the Christmas missive of the Estonian Council of Churches for 2009:
"There are very few people who are not directly or remotely affected by the today’s recession. We all are in the same boat. We invite everyone to show more solidarity and empathy for people around them, especially for those in need. This will make us stronger as a nation and gives the society more hope and peace."
The family initiating the project calls for cooperation by raising money or volunteering in order to help children with mobility impairment to walk!
